Seen Through Our Eyes

Mississippi Cultural Crossroads announces the publication of Seen Through Our Eyes, a 64-page book showcasing the artwork of young Mississippians. School children from four Mississippi communities created paintings, masks, collages, and drawings while they explored culture. To see inside the book and read advance praise, please visit the Mississippi Cultural Crossroads website and click on the YPCEP link.

Crossroads Quilters Exhibit at Chicago Blues Festival

Crossroads Quilters will demonstrate quilting and sell their wares in Chicago from June 7-10 near the Mississippi tent at the Chicago Blues Festival. For more information on the festival, visit http://chicagobluesfestival.org/. To browse quilts and related items online, visit Mississippi Cultural Crossroads and click on the Quilts for Sale link.

Remember to tune in to your local PBS station on Wednesday night (May 30th) for Craft in America, a three-hour documentary. Crossroads Quilters appear early in the third segment, titled Community. http://www.craftinamerica.org/.

Community Appreciation Day

Community Appreciation Day June 2nd

Join us on June 2nd from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. for our first Community Appreciation Day, offered in partnership with Sonic Drive-In. We will offer free t-shirts, crafts, bingo, and other activities for the whole family in the lot adjacent to the popular local restaurant. Sonic will donate a percentage of its June 2nd receipts to Mississippi Cultural Crossroads.

Students Will Study History of MCC in Summer Work Program

As we prepare for our 30th Anniversary and Homecoming Celebration in 2008, we will engage 16 high school students in the work of examining our program history. Students will examine nearly 70 boxes of business and program records and organize them for eventual transfer to the state department of Archives and History.

As a pilot project earlier this year, six high school students studied the records of Pieces and Strings Quilt Show. David Crosby finished their work and we now have a valuable community record of the 244 women who have entered quilts, the 1,005 quilts they have entered, and the 524 cash prizes they have won.

Colorado Visitor Wins Raffle Quilt

A Colorado man who was visiting a Port Gibson relative during the Pieces and Strings Annual Quilt Contest and Show purchased the winning raffle ticket for 2007.
