Thirtieth Anniversary Celebration and Crosby Retirement
Mississippi Cultural Crossroads is celebrating 30 years of providing arts and cultural programs in Claiborne County. We ask you to make a note in your calendars that we are having a day of celebration and reunion on Saturday, June 21, 2008.This will include an open house (10 a.m. - 4 p.m.) and exhibit showcasing Peanut Butter and Jelly Theater, Summer Art, Crossroads Quilters and many other programs Cultural Crossroads has sponsored over the years. The open house is free and will include refreshments.
The celebration will culminate with a Roast & Toast, a ticketed gala event (7 p.m. - 10 p.m.) honoring the successes of the organization and highlighted by a roast of executive director Patty Crosby, who will retire June 30th. Young Person's Cultural Exchange Program Exhibit
An exhibit of art work created by young people who participated in the Young Person's Cultural Exchange Program will open at the Mississippi Museum of Art March 29 and run through May 25. The 55 pieces, selected from more than 500 created by 150 young people from Madison, Jackson, Biloxi and Port Gibson, will be shown in the BancorpSouth classroom.
A reception honoring the artists will be held April 12 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. as part of “A Mississippi Celebration.” Copies of Seen Through Our Eyes, which documents the two-year program, its participating organizations and artists, will be available. The Mississippi Celebration is a three-day-long celebration of Mississippi culture with an emphasis on visual art. Activities include programs, panel discussions, lectures, master classes, workshops, tours, luncheons, etc. For more information click here.
Pieces & Strings
Pieces & Strings, our quilt contest and show, will be held March 28 - March 30. Quilts will hang through April 30. In its 21st year, this unique exhibition celebrates the best quilts being produced in the Mississippi folk tradition. Contest Judges are: Roland Freeman, photographer, author of the quilt book A Communion of the Spirits and Mary Lohrenz, curator, Mississippi Governor's Mansion. For more information, click here.
Quilters Win Awards, Work Travels
Some Crossroads Quilters have recently been honored with fellowships and have work in exhibits that are traveling the country:Geraldine Nash won fellowships from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the Fund for Folk Culture.
